85-87 Shandwick Place, Edinburgh

85-87 Shandwick Place is a four-storey, two-bay symmetrical shop building designed by R Thornton Shiells & Thomson in 1889. The ground floor features polished black granite, while the upper floors are clad in polished red sandstone ashlar. The ground floor has a modern shop fascia, with a lintel course at each floor and a cill course on the second and third floors. The windows have chamfered reveals and are adorned with half-fluted pilasters at the first floor. The second and third floors feature recessed panels with central geometric shapes flanking the windows.

The northwest elevation, which is the principal facade, has a modern shop front at the ground floor with a panelled timber pend door offset to the right. Above, each bay contains regularly arranged four-light canted windows, each topped with individual polygonal roofs.

The southwest and northeast elevations are obscured by adjoining buildings, and the southeast elevation was not visible in 2000. The building has two-pane timber sash and case windows, with modern shop windows at the ground floor. The polygonal roofs are covered in grey slate and feature vestigial finials, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior is fitted as a modern shop at the ground floor, with the rest of the interior not visible.
