Description

89, 91, 93, 95, 97, and 99 Shandwick Place in Edinburgh is a four-storey, six-bay symmetrical terrace designed by W F Rollo-Wilkie in 1896. The building features classical detailing and has modern shops on the ground floor. The ground level is finished in polished black granite, while the upper floors are clad in polished cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. There is a corniced band course on the upper floors, with dentil moulding at the second floor and a cill course at both the second and third floors.

The first floor has pilastered aedicules with segmental pediments over the central windows, and similar aedicules with triangular pediments, panelled dies, and plain aprons over the windows in the flanking bays. The second and third floors have architraves, with the second floor featuring cornicing. The first floor is marked by pavilions flanked by channelled strip pilasters, while the second floor is flanked by Roman Doric pilasters.

The principal elevation on the northwest side has modern shop fronts at the ground level, with a recessed doorway in the center and to the left. To the right, there is a panelled timber pend door with a large fanlight. The upper floors are arranged in groups of two, with two central recessed bays that have a balustrade at the first floor, and flanking two-bay groups that form French roofed twin pavilions. The fenestration is regular across all floors.

The southwest and northeast elevations are obscured by adjoining buildings, and the southeast elevation was not visible in 2000. The ground floor has modern shop windows, while the upper floors feature two-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a coped panelled sandstone ashlar wallhead stack positioned between paired roofs, supported by small segmental-headed blocks. There are coped mutual stacks and a full complement of moulded cylindrical cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior is fitted as modern shops at the ground floor, with the remainder of the interior unseen in 2000.
