Description

101 Shandwick Place in Edinburgh is a classical flatted block built around 1815, with later alterations. It stands three storeys tall with an attic, and four storeys at the rear, featuring seven bays that are nearly symmetrical. The ground floor extends out at the front, southwest end, and rear as shops, which are of Victorian design. The northwest elevation is constructed of broached sandstone ashlar, while the southwest is made of random rubble. Architectural details include a dentil cornice with a blocking course at the ground floor, a cill course for four windows on the left that continues as a string course to the right at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. There are plain and decorative wrought-iron balconies at the windows on the right side at the first and second floors, respectively.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, modern shop fronts with contemporary glazing flank a panelled timber door topped by a large fanlight at the ground floor. A slightly recessed staircase bay is located at the center, featuring regular fenestration, with additional regular fenestration in the flanking bays to the left and right. The piended dormers above originally had tripartite designs, with the left flanking light now blind and the right one slated over.

The southwest (Canning Street) elevation has a modern bar built out at the ground floor, with an attic window positioned to the right of the gable. The northeast elevation is obscured by an adjacent building, while the southeast elevation was not visible in 2000. The ground floor features modern glazing, while the upper floors have timber sash and case windows with 4, 12, and 15 panes. The roof is covered with grey slate, including the piended dormers, and features coped skews. There is a rebuilt concrete gablehead stack on the southwest with a full complement of cylindrical cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the ground floor is fitted as a modern restaurant and bar, while the rest of the interior remains unseen.
