36 Brighton Place, Edinburgh

34 Brighton Place in Edinburgh is a pair of classical terraced houses built around 1824 by John Baxter of Portobello. These two-storey, three-bay houses feature single-storey pavilions on either side. The front is made of polished ashlar stone that is deeply channelled at the ground level, while the pavilions are constructed from droved ashlar. The side elevations and rear are made of squared and snecked sandstone, and the northeast elevation of the single-storey pavilions is finished in stugged ashlar. There are band courses between the basement and ground floor, as well as between the ground and first floors, along with a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course, plus coping and a band course on the pavilions.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, there are three steps leading up to deep-set Edinburgh panelled doors in the outer bays, which are topped with radial rectangular fanlights and windows above. Each intermediate bay has windows on every floor. The pavilion features a window and a boarded door, although the door is blinded for No 34.

The northwest (rear) elevation has a bay in the centre of each blank section, with a later door that is blinded at ground level in the central bay, and a window in the wing. There is also a single-storey later addition to the outer left of the wing, which includes a window and door facing southwest. The rear of No 36 was not visible in 1994.

The northeast elevation includes a stair window for the main house, a boarded door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight, and two flanking blinded windows in the single-storey pavilion. The houses feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof, and a lean-to roof on the wing and rear addition. There are various stacks, including a rendered and coped mutual stack at the front, a brick and rendered mutual stack at the rear, and several ashlar and coped wallhead stacks.

Inside No 34, the original shutters are still in place, along with a cast-iron banister and good plaster work. The front room on the ground floor features a classical wooden chimneypiece with an urn motif and fluted panels. No 36 has an original cast-iron banister and similar plaster work to No 34.

The boundary wall at the front is made of sandstone, originally droved ashlar but now badly weathered, and it is coped and was formerly topped with railings. There are tall rubble garden walls at the rear.
