Description
5 Greenhill Park is a two-storey, three-bay asymmetrical villa built in 1859, with a side wing added in 1929. It was designed by John Henderson. The building is constructed of cream-coloured sandstone, with squared and snecked rubble walls, and the front elevation is stugged with ashlar dressings. Chamfered window reveals are accented with columnar mullions and pilasters featuring Egyptian-style capitals.
The south (front) elevation features an advanced, broad gabled bay to the right, with a band course above the ground floor and a cill band course at the first floor. A canted window is present at ground floor, finished with a frieze and cornice. A pilastered, segmental-arched window sits above, featuring an ashlar apron, keystone, and an open segmental pediment. To the left are two single-storey bays with overhanging eaves supported by stone corbels. A round-arched entrance door, complete with a panelled door, semi-circular fanlight, and tiled vestibule, is positioned on the right. A canted window breaks the eaves in the gablehead, incorporating a timber beam. A lower two-storey extension is situated to the outer right, incorporating a band course above the ground floor and a corniced bipartite window at ground floor; a single window with rounded reveals is located at first floor.
The north (rear) elevation presents a gabled main block with a secondary entrance door and single windows. A single-storey recessed bay is positioned to the right, housing a single window and a small box dormer. A single-storey extension extends with a lean-to roof which turns the corner to the left.
The east elevation includes a string course above ground floor, a side wing to the left, and a gabled bay to the left with a single window at ground floor and a segmental-arched window at first floor. A wallhead stack is on the right bay, and a single-storey extension incorporates a lean-to roof turning the corner to the right. The windows are timber sash and case, predominantly with four-pane glazing, some with twelve-pane glazing, and plate glass to the rear. The roof is slate with metal flashings; there are three wallhead stacks—one as described above, and two apex stacks to the east and west, capped with octagonal cans. The eaves have a moulded gutter.
The interior includes a tiled hall with a rectangular skylight above, a staircase with cast-iron balusters, and cornices.
The property is enclosed by boundary walls and gatepiers. A tall rubble wall with semi-circular coping defines the rear and sides, while a lower wall with saddleback coping fronts the property. Art Deco-style pedestrian gatepiers, along with tall carriage gatepiers featuring cut-away arrises and semi-circular coping, and cast-iron carriage gates, complete the setting.
