Description
160A Canongate is a mid 19th century, three-storey, seven-bay tenement that serves both commercial and residential purposes. The building features a symmetrical design with a voussoired pend and a two-storey corniced oriel window. The central bay has a crow-stepped attic gable topped with a star finial, and the ground floor is flanked by shops. The structure is built of squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings and painted ashlar at the ground level. It has moulded margins and buckle quoins, with a cornice separating the ground and first floors and an eaves course above. A carved panel is located between the storeys of the oriel window. The shops have architraved doors and windows, along with panelled timber doors. The rear elevation includes stair windows between floors and some later alterations at the ground level.
The upper floors feature eight and twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, while the shops have fixed plate-glass windows with a six-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with Scottish slate, and there are broad end stacks along with an additional axial stack in the attic. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods.
