Description
4 Humbie Cottages is a row of four near-symmetrical cottages built in 1843 and altered in 1903. They are arranged in a single storey, long shallow E-plan with an advanced gable and terminal bays. The cottages are constructed from squared and snecked honey-coloured sandstone, featuring stugged lintels, raised cills, and quoins, with timber mullions.
On the southeast elevation, the advanced gables have bipartite windows, each half-blinded, under a common lintel and cill. There is a small rectangular window in the west return of the centre gable. The left (west) cottage has a 5-bay L plan with a gable; it features a boarded door located by the re-entrant angle, with two bipartite windows to the right and a small window to the left. The centre cottage has four bays, a boarded door with a small window to the left, and a bipartite window to the right and outer left. The cottages on the east have smaller windows in a mirrored arrangement. A date-stone from 1843 is located above a blind window at the east gable.
The east and west elevations are blank, while the north elevation has modern additions and returns. The cottages feature 16-pane sash and case bipartite windows in the gables and 8-pane sash and case windows on the main elevations. The roof is covered with grey slate and has coped ridge stacks, with a ball finial on the east gable; however, the finials on the centre and west gables have been broken off.
