Description
12 Palmerston Place Church in Edinburgh was designed by Peddie and Kinnear and built between 1873 and 1875. This Italianate D-plan church features a two-storey central section with dome-capped four-stage towers, constructed from polished sandstone ashlar. A string course runs along the first floor, topped by a cornice.
The northeast elevation, which is the principal facade, has steps leading up to a five-arch loggia designed in the Tivoli order. It includes three two-leaf entrance doors with segmental fanlights, flanked by single round-arched windows. Above the loggia are five round-arched Coducci windows, with arches springing from pilasters and a parapet above. The dome-capped four-stage towers on either side of the centre have single windows at the basement level, an architraved single window on the first floor, and an architraved window with a pediment on the second floor. The fourth stage is open on all four sides, each featuring an arched window framed by Tivoli order pilasters and a pediment, all resting on a polygonal plinth capped with a dome and topped by a ball and cross.
The southeast elevation has a blind wall and a glass link connecting the church to a nursery. The west elevation shows attached buildings at ground level and a blind wall above, with a clerestory that includes five sets of three slim arched lights. The church features a variety of glazing patterns.
Inside, there is a wall along the street front with railings topped by fleur-de-lys finials, and ornate lamp standards mounted on the walls.
