6 Palmerston Place, Edinburgh

4 Palmerston Place in Edinburgh is a terraced townhouse designed by John Chesser between 1874 and 1878. This three-storey building with a basement features two bays and two-storey canted bays. The exterior is constructed from polished sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, while the basement is droved. There is a banded cill course for the ground and first-floor windows, along with a string course and brackets supporting the cornice. The doorpieces are adorned with an elaborately consoled cornice, and there are ironwork balconies above the first and second-floor windows.

On the northeast (principal) elevation, the entrance is centrally located in the basement, accompanied by a small window to the left beneath an oversailing platt. The right side features a window on the central face of the canted bay. Access to the panelled timber door, which has a large rectangular fanlight, is via ashlar steps and an entrance platt. Each house has a single window above on the first and second floors, with lights on each face of the canted bay at the ground and first floors. The outer right bay at the second floor has a tripartite window.

The windows are fitted with 2- and 4-pane timber sash and case glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are coped mutual sandstone ashlar stacks, with a rendered stack for Nos 4 and 6, topped with tall moulded cylindrical cans. The building also features cast-iron rainwater goods. Fleur-de-lys railings are present at the entrance platts and set in the coping along the street.
