Description
Broughton Halls is a former school building located at 32C Broughton Street, Edinburgh, designed by Alexander Black in 1853, with later alterations. This three-storey, four-bay structure features Jacobean detailing and has an arcaded ground floor that is overlaid by later shopfronts. The principal elevation is constructed of broached ashlar, while the side elevations are stugged and squared. It has a base course, a string course between the ground and first floor on the northwest elevation, and a cill course at the first and second floors, which returns and terminates at the southeast elevation. The second floor has a cornice and a blocking course, which also returns and terminates at the southeast elevation.
On the northeast (principal) elevation, the advanced five-bay ground floor includes decorative pilasters, a cyma recta cornice, and a blocking course. The centre and right sections feature a pair of two-bay shop fronts with decorative plate glass windows that have small pane details, along with recessed modern doors topped with blind fanlights and glazed returns. To the left, there is a modern two-leaf door with a blind fanlight. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with architraved windows at the first and second floors. The first-floor windows are adorned with cornices and strapwork pediments. A crested gable spans two bays at the second floor, featuring an aediculed niche flanked by gabletted finials with blind arrowslits, topped with crockets at the hopperheads and stylised acroteria at the corners. There is a blind rectangular wall panel with a decorative circular motif centered at the first floor.
The northwest elevation has a barred window with tooled dressing to the right of centre at ground level and a recessed modern door to the outer right. There are three small blind square windows with pediments evenly spaced along the ground floor cornice. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with blind architraved windows on all floors, and the first-floor windows also feature cornices with strapwork pediments. A pair of small blind windows with pediments is centered in the gable.
The southeast elevation adjoins another building, which is listed separately (28-30 Broughton Street). The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofs, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The gablehead stacks are tripartite ashlar on gabletted bases, coped, and topped with polygonal cans. The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
