Description

The Stables and Cottage Range at Summerside Farmhouse dates from around 1780, with a drawing room wing added in the early 19th century and two further additions. This is a two-storey and attic, three-bay farmhouse constructed of rubble with roughly tooled dressings and a harled south gable. It features two-pane sash windows, straight skews, a slate roof, and rebuilt brick stacks. The drawing room wing is a single-storey structure with two windows and a piended roof.

Inside, the farmhouse includes six-panel raised and fielded doors and window shutters. The drawing room boasts a delicate plaster cornice, a wide square pilastered recess that may have originally been intended as a dining room with a sideboard recess, and a delicate frieze featuring female heads and circular decoration. The main door and shutters are panelled, and there are Victorian tiled grates, one of which has been recently added.

The stables and cottage range are positioned at right angles to the house and follow a curve. This single-storey and loft range includes two cart openings supported by a cast-iron column, a two-stall stable, a tack room, and lofts, with one loft door present.

The cottage, now gutted with blocked windows, was originally designed with three wide bays and dormerheads, featuring a large stack to the west hearth, and is entirely covered with pantiles.
