Description
83 Milton Road East in Edinburgh is a building from the later 18th century, with some later alterations. It is part of a group that includes No 81, which is a single-storey, three-bay cottage running parallel to Milton Road East. Nos 83 and 85 are a single and two-storey structure with five bays, positioned perpendicular to Milton Road East and located to the east of No 81. The buildings are constructed of sandstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings.
For No 81, the south elevation facing Milton Road East features three evenly spaced bays with a lintel at the eaves level. There is a gable above the central bay and swept dormerheads on each of the outer bays. The north elevation has a door in the center with a rectangular fanlight above it, a window to the right, and a later bipartite window to the left.
Nos 83 and 85 have a west elevation that includes a two-bay group on the left, which is single storey and possibly a later addition. The central bay has two windows at ground level and a window above on the first floor that breaks the eaves with a swept dormerhead. There is a window at ground level in the bay to the right of center, with another window breaking the eaves, similar to the center. A modern panelled door is located between the inner and outer left bays. The left inner bay has windows at both ground and first floors. There is also a half-piended addition projecting from the building, with a window in each bay. The south elevation features a bracketed oriel timber bipartite window at first floor level, set in a gablehead with kneelers. The east elevation is not visible as of 1995.
The windows throughout the building are 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is pantiled, and there are ashlar wallhead stacks at the gablehead of each cottage.
The interior was not seen as of 1995. The property is enclosed by a tall rubble boundary wall with rounded coping.
