Victoria Swing Bridge, Leith Docks, Edinburgh

The Victoria Swing Bridge, located in Leith Docks, Edinburgh, was designed by Alexander M Rendel and constructed between 1871 and 1874 by Skerne Iron Works, with alterations made by Peter Whyte in 1896. This large, single span bridge features a bowed truss hydraulic design made of riveted wrought iron, timber, and steel. Its asymmetrical arch profile characterizes the cantilever span, which has a clear span of 120 feet and an overall length of 212 feet. The roadway measures 24 feet in width and includes a timber deck with pedestrian walkways on either side. Metal railings line the outer edges of these walkways. Additionally, there is a timber resting platform along the quayside to the northwest and a flight of concrete steps on the southeast side of the turning platform, leading from the bridge deck level to the bottom of the platform.
