Description

The West Lodge Complex at Edinburgh Zoo, designed by A W Macnaughtan around 1891, consists of a two-storey and attic, four-bay rectangular lodge, along with attached stables and a maintenance block. The buildings are constructed from red squared and snecked tooled sandstone, featuring stugged and polished ashlar surrounds, and long and short window surrounds.

On the south elevation, the lodge has a four-bay layout. There is a bipartite mullioned window at the ground level in an advanced crowstepped gabled bay to the right, with a single window featuring a hoodmould at the first floor and another window in the attic. A single window is located at the ground level in a canted corner to the outer right. To the left, there is a three-light oriel window at the first floor within a recessed three-bay section, topped by a castellated parapet and a gabled dormer in the attic. Flanking the central section are single windows at the ground level, and the base features a battered course.

The entrance elevation to the east has a single step leading to a roll-moulded pedimented doorway at the center, with the pediment adorned by a thistle motif. To the right, there is a single window at ground level, and to the outer left, another single window in a canted angle. A pepperpot turret bartizan tower is situated at the outer right, which contains a blind single window.

The east elevation of the stable block features two-leaf painted timber doors at ground level, a segmental carriage arch with a crenellated parapet, and voussoirs, along with a plaque. The maintenance yard's east elevation has an advanced crowstepped gable at the center, with a door and fanlight at the first floor, flanked by recessed bays and a single timber door with a fanlight at the outer right.

The windows throughout the complex are timber sash and case, with 6- and 9-pane glazing in the upper sashes. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a piended design, along with a timber and glass cupola on the stable block. The wallheads and apex stacks are corniced with moulded circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.

Inside the West Lodge, there is tongue and groove panelling in the ground floor room, while the interior of the stables is lined with white ceramic brick blocks.
