Description

The Gates and Gate Piers at the Lodge of Edinburgh Zoo, located at 134 Corstorphine Road, were designed by Alexander Paterson between 1923 and 1926. This single-storey lodge features an attic and has a three-bay, rectangular plan in the Beaux Arts classical style. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and includes a base course, a dividing band course, and a corniced frieze.

On the south elevation, there are three arcaded bays flanked by paired rock-faced pilasters topped with eagles. The central bay is a blind arch with a recessed design and features a plaque with a gilded frieze that reads 'Scottish Zoological Park', along with an aedicule that contains a clock face. Each flanking bay has a single window.

The north elevation includes a stair tower at the center. The west elevation has a timber door set in a recessed bay to the outer left, with a small window above it. There is a large window in the bay to the left, a small single window at the center, and another single window in the attic. The windows are timber sash and case with six-pane glazing in the upper sashes. The roof is gabled and piended, covered with grey slate, and features gablehead corniced stacks, moulded skews, and circular cans.

The gates and gate piers are made of sandstone with regularised rock-faced surfaces, featuring an ashlar plinth and cornice. The pedestrian gateways flanking the lodge are round-arched, with carriage gateways to the outer left and a large pedestrian gateway to the outer right. The gates and railings are highly decorative, made of cast iron and incorporating athemion and palmette details, with two gilded eagle roundels on the carriage gates. A K6 telephone kiosk is also present on the site.
