Description

This is a two-storey with basement, seven-bay former children's home, built in 1891 to a half-timbered 'Old English' style by James Jerdan. The building is constructed of red brick with painted harl nogging, painted timber framing and bargeboards, and red sandstone ashlar dressings.

The north (entrance) elevation features steps leading to a central doorway with a roll-moulded surround, corniced console pediment, and long and short surrounds. Above the doorway is a bipartite window. Flanking this are tripartite windows at ground level, with stone transoms and mullions and relieving arches. Bipartite windows are located above on the first floor. Advanced gabled bays flank the main section, each featuring a three-light canted window at ground level and a tripartite window above. Recessed bays to the outer left and right have a single window at ground level and a bipartite window above.

The south elevation, also two-storeys with a basement, has a recessed central two-bay section with four basement windows. A small rectangular projection is situated to the right, with two tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors. Flanking advanced gabled bays have two basement windows and tripartite windows on both floors.

The east elevation is also two-storeys with a basement and attic, and six bays wide. An advanced gabled bay to the right has two ground floor windows and a single attic window. A recessed bay to the outer right includes a single ground floor window. The four bays to the left feature a basement window, a doorway, a bipartite window, a single window, and a door, from outer left to right. Fenestration is regular on both ground and first floors, with bipartite windows on the first floor.

The west elevation mirrors the east, also having two storeys, a basement and attic, and six bays. An advanced gabled bay to the left has two ground floor windows and a single attic window. A recessed bay to the outer left includes a single ground floor window. The four bays to the right are arranged as; a basement window, a doorway, a single window, a bipartite window and a single window, from outer right to left. Fenestration is regular on both ground and first floors, with bipartite windows on the first floor.

Windows have a variety of glazing patterns, including 12-pane timber sash and case windows, 6-pane upper sashes with 2-pane lower sashes, and small-pane casement windows. The roof is covered in grey slate, and there are four tall corbelled brick chimney stacks. The interior was not inspected in 1997.

Boundary walls are constructed of sandstone rubble to the north, east and west (with a fence to the south), featuring a central pedestrian entrance and vehicular entrances to the outer right and left. There is a half-timbered, piended-roof outbuilding to the east, and a half-timbered, pitch-roofed outbuilding to the south.
