Description
The bridge at the entry head of Dalmahoy Estate in Edinburgh was likely designed by Alexander Laing, based on designs by William Adam, around 1786. This single-span bridge features a round arch and carries the avenue to Dalmahoy House over the Gogar Burn. It is constructed of droved ashlar stone, with a polished ashlar impost that continues as a string course and a moulded archivolt. The random rubble abutments are set at an angle beyond the line of the bridge, with droved quoins at both the left and right corners. The ashlar parapet is fluted and has a moulded coping, with paterae placed at regular intervals—two above the bridge span and one at the center of each abutment. An armorial plaque is positioned above the crown of the bridge on each side.
