Description
53, 55, 57, 59, 61, 63, 65 Dundas Street is a terraced tenement building designed by Thomas Bonnar in 1820. It has four storeys and a basement, with the fourth storey serving as a wallhead attic. The building is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone and features V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. Notable architectural elements include a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor as well as between the principal and first floors, projecting cills for the first and second floor windows, and cornices at both the second and third floors. The entrance is approached by ashlar steps and platts that extend over the basement.
On the west elevation, there is a panelled timber common stair door located centrally at the principal floor, accompanied by a blind rectangular fanlight. In the third bay from the left, a six-panel timber door is topped with a diamond-paned rectangular fanlight. To the right at the principal floor is a four-bay former Royal Bank of Scotland (No 53, Braemore Property Management), which features a flat-roofed corniced porch that projects into the outer right bay. This porch includes a recessed round-arched doorpiece with a panelled timber door and a radial semicircular fanlight. On the outer left, there is a basement shop (No 65, Unicorn Antiques) with a five-pane plate glass window and a recessed glazed door.
The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (67-77 Dundas Street), as does the south elevation (2-42A Great King Street). The building predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. It has rubble ridge and gablehead stacks that are coped and fitted with circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings that include balusters and finials.
