Description
The White House, located at 68-70 Niddrie Mains Road in Edinburgh, is a two-storey International Modern roadhouse built in 1936 by William Innes Thomson of W N Thomson and Co. The building features an irregular plan and Art Deco detailing, constructed with harled brick and a painted terrazzo base course, along with a dividing band course and a parapet.
On the north elevation facing Niddrie Mains Road, the building has three bays, including a bowed angle bay. The outer right has a broad entrance bay with a boarded-up doorway, a bracketed canopy with a blocking course, and an advertisement fin above, along with a window on the first floor. The central bay features a full-height angled chimneybreast with slit windows on both floors. The outer left bay has five-light bowed windows on both floors.
The east elevation, which faces Craigmillar Castle Loan, is two-storey with two bays on the outer right and a stepped single storey with two bays on the outer left. There is a bracketed canopy over the doorways between the two bays on the outer right, a decorative iron grille on the fanlight, and an advertisement fin above. Strip windows are present in the bay on the outer right.
The south and west elevations were not seen in 1995, and there is later replacement glazing. The building has a flat roof. The interior was also not seen in 1995.
