5 Vanburgh Place, Leith, Edinburgh

8 Vanburgh Place in Leith, Edinburgh, is a terrace of eight houses designed by William Lamb in 1826. The terrace is arranged as four mirrored pairs, each two stories high with a raised basement. The front is finished in droved ashlar sandstone, accented with polished ashlar dressings, featuring a broad base course, a cill course for the first-floor windows, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course.

The northwest elevation is symmetrical, with evenly spaced bays. Each pair of houses has entrance doors located in the center bays, which are fielded panelled and adorned with a carved ovoid wreath in the lower panel. The doors feature rectangular plate glass fanlights, with a multi-pane pattern at No 2. The entrance is framed by Ionic columned and pilastered double doorpieces, topped with unifying entablatures, which are painted at No 6. The columns and pilasters have fluting at their heads, and there are basement windows.

The southeast elevation was not visible in 1995. The southwest elevation features a bowed return with a single window on each floor.

The windows are predominantly plate glass timber sash and case, with No 8 having 16-lying pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is a grey slate piended design. The houses have mutual multi-flue stacks made of squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressing and cornice, which are truncated at Nos 4 and 5. Ashlar skew copes are present, and stone steps with modern railings lead to the basement recesses.

The boundary wall is an ashlar dwarf wall with coping that borders the street. The interior was not seen in 1995.
