Description
This building is a public house located at 1-2 Abbey Mount in Edinburgh, constructed in 1887. It is a five-storey corner tenement featuring three bays that are bowed and balustraded facing Montrose Terrace, and five bays along Abbeymount. The ground floor includes shops and the public house, which has an advanced front. The exterior is made of coursed sandstone with polished red sandstone dressings, and it features prominent wallhead stacks with fluted friezes. There are cill courses on the first and second floors, and broken cill courses on the third and fourth floors, along with long and short quoins. All openings are surrounded by chamfered, roll-moulded surrounds.
On the southwest elevation facing Abbeymount, there are wallhead stacks at the center and left, with the left stack corbelled out at the third floor. The right side has two shops at the ground floor with large plate glass windows and recessed half-glazed doors topped with plate glass fanlights. There is a wider entrance between the shops with plain cast-iron gates and decorative wrought-iron cresting, leading to a two-leaf timber panelled door. To the left, there is a timber panelled door to the flats with a small-pane glazed fanlight, and another two-leaf timber panelled door leading to the pub. The outer right features bipartite windows with a ball-finialled dormer head breaking the eaves above. The three-bay section to the outer right has pedimented windows on the first floor, corbelling and machicolation on the third and fourth floors, and a decorative parapet with a ball-finialled, bracketed triangular pediment above. There is also a decorative panel on the outer left with a roll-moulded frame and embossed lettering that reads "ABBEY MOUNT."
The northwest elevation facing Montrose Terrace includes a two-bay canted section that is corbelled to bow at the fourth floor, with a machicolated balustraded parapet featuring decorative canon spouts. To the left is a single bay with a wallhead stack that is corbelled out from the first floor, and there is a roll-moulded, pedimented panel on the stack bearing the date 1887. The entrance to the pub is located on the outer right, featuring a two-leaf timber panelled door.
The upper sashes predominantly have eight-pane glazing, while the lower sashes have two-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows on the third and fourth floors. The first and second floors mainly feature uPVC windows that emulate the original glazing pattern. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has asymmetrical crowstepped gables flanking corniced wallhead stacks, with the two on the Abbeymount elevation having polygonal ends. There are also circular clay cans present.
