Description

The gas holder at Granton Gasworks, located at 336 West Granton Road in Edinburgh, was designed by W R Herring and built between 1898 and 1902. This structure features a circular plan and is a column-guided gasholder. Its external framework is made of riveted rolled steel and consists of 24 vertical posts topped with finials, which previously held gas flames. These posts are organized into four tiers, connected by horizontal tie beams, with latticework bracing in between. At the center, there is a drum-shaped steel tank situated above a 252-foot diameter shaft made of brick and cement mortar, which is sunk 37 feet into the ground.
