Description

The Dovecot at Caroline Park, located on West Shore Road in Edinburgh, dates from the early to mid-18th century, though it may incorporate elements from the 16th and 17th centuries, with some 20th-century alterations. This structure was part of the former Granton Castle estate and includes a large, rectangular walled garden made of coursed sandstone rubble, along with a lectern doocot and an adjoining boundary wall. The walled garden and doocot are situated to the northwest of Caroline Park House and have been associated with this estate since around 1740.

The walled garden is constructed of sandstone rubble with ridged rubble coping, and it may include sections of the original Granton Castle walls on the west and north sides.

The doocot is rectangular, oriented east-west, and features a single-pitched grey slate roof that slopes down towards the south. It has crowstepped sides on the east and west elevations and contains two rat-courses. The original nest boxes and flight holes are no longer present, and the entrance may have been located at the ridge of the roof. There are two windows on the south elevation, and a doorway that once existed on the west elevation has been blocked.

The boundary wall is made of random rubble with ridged rubble coping in some areas and forms a U-shape around the south and east of the doocot. The doocot is positioned towards the north of the west section of the wall, which ends at a corrugated iron fence to the north and includes a margined doorway further south. The southern section of the wall features a later gateway with gateposts topped with ball finials towards the east. The eastern section of the wall ends opposite the north end of the service wing of Caroline Park House (Royston House), and there are later outbuilding structures on the inner faces of the southern and eastern sections of the wall.
