Description

This villa at 2 Oswald Road, built around 1870, is a two-storey, three-bay structure with an adjoining single-storey service wing and a conservatory. It features squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, and coursed ashlar on the south elevation. The design includes a base course, cornice, roll-moulded window surrounds, and channelled quoins.

On the south entrance elevation, there is a central raised doorpiece with carved consoles and a cornice, leading to an architraved and keystoned segmental-arched doorway with a deep-set panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. A single window is located at the first floor above the entrance, featuring a bracketed cill. Full-height canted windows are positioned in the outer left and right bays, separated by dividing cornices. The service wing is recessed and located to the outer right.

The east elevation shows the service wing advanced at the ground floor and extending to the outer right, with a round-arched stair window at the first floor. The west elevation includes a conservatory added in 1895 to the outer right and a flat-roofed harled log shed built in 1955 adjoining the center. There is a single window at the first floor to the outer right.

On the north rear elevation, there are single windows in the bays at the center and outer left, with a single window at ground level to the outer right and a bipartite window at the first floor. A single-storey extension to the service wing is located to the outer left, featuring two doorways. The property has plate glass sash and case windows, with six panes on the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate and features piended design, segmental-headed dormers (two on the south and two on the north), a shouldered and corniced wallhead stack to the west, and a coped wallhead stack to the east with a rendered chimney breast, moulded cans, and moulded eaves guttering.

Inside, the villa boasts decorative plasterwork, original marble fireplaces, and an ornate cast-iron stair balustrade.

The boundary walls, gate, and railings include a low saddleback wall to the street and a mutual wall with No 4 Oswald Road, both topped with decorative cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lys heads. There is a pedestrian gate in a similar style, along with high coped rubble mutual walls at the rear and sides of the property.
