Description
41 Northumberland Street in Edinburgh is an early 19th-century terraced tenement designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald. The building is three stories high with a basement and features six bays, with the third story serving as a wallhead attic. It consists of a pair of three-bay houses constructed from polished ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication on the principal floor and broached ashlar sandstone at the basement on the main elevation. The west gable is made of coursed rubble. Architectural details include a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the principal and first floors, a cill course at the first floor with lowered cills, and a cornice at the first floor, topped by a blocking course at the second floor. The first-floor windows are architraved, while the second floor features smaller square windows. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.
On the south (principal) elevation, there are panelled timber doors located in the outer right bay and the third bay from the left. The door at No 39 has a radial rectangular fanlight, while No 41 has a plate glass rectangular fanlight. The fenestration is regular across the remaining bays on the principal floor, as well as on the upper floors and basement.
The east elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (22 and 22A Dundas Street). The west elevation has windows that are centered on the first and second floors.
The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods, along with rendered ridge and gablehead stacks.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings with balusters and finials, as well as a cast-iron lamp mounted on the railings with a glass globe.
