Description
22 and 22A Dundas Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and basement, five-bay terraced tenement built in the early 19th century by architects Robert Reid and William Sibbald. The building features a wallhead attic on the fourth storey and is located on a corner site. It is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. The design includes a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor, and between the principal and first floors. There are projecting cills at the first and second floors, a cornice at the second floor that continues as a band course on the south elevation, and a cornice and blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.
On the east (principal) elevation, there is a panelled timber door with a blind rectangular fanlight located in the penultimate bay from the right at the principal floor, flanked by windows, while the remaining bays at the principal floor have blind windows. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with blind windows in the outer left bay and the penultimate bay from the left at all floors. The basement includes a window at the center and a two-bay shop front to the right (No 22A, Hanover Fine Art) with a timber door to the left and a window to the right.
The south elevation (Northumberland Street) features a round-arched doorpiece with a panelled timber door and a decorative radial fanlight centered at the principal floor, flanked by windows in the remaining bays. The upper floors and basement have regular fenestration.
The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (24-28 Dundas Street), and the west elevation also adjoins a terrace listed separately (39 and 41 Northumberland Street).
The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There are broached ashlar shouldered wallhead stacks centered at the north and south elevations, along with a rubble gablehead stack featuring broached ashlar quoins, coped with circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes surmounted by iron railings with spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
