Description

Robert Reid and William Sibbald, early 19th century. 2-storey, attic and basement, 9-bay terraced tenement, comprising 3 3-bay houses. Polished ashlar sandstone; V-jointed rustication at principal floor. Base course; band courses between basement and principal floor, principal and 1st floors; projecting cills to windows; cornice and blocking course at 2nd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement. Mews to rear, see below.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: round-arched doorpieces in bays to left at principal floor, to each 3-bay house, comprising panelled timber doors with semicircular fanlights, radial at Nos 43 and 47, plate glass at No 45. Regular fenestration in remaining bays at principal floor, and to floors above and basement.

E ELEVATION: coursed rubble gable; windows centred at 1st floor and attic.

W ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (49 Northumberland Street).

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof; canted piended dormers at No 43, 3-bay rectangular dormer at No 45, 2-bay rendered box dormer at No 47. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered ridge and gablehead stacks; coped, with circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.

RAILINGS AND LAMPS: ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings with spear-headed balusters and urn finials. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamps with glass globes.

MEWS:

2 NORTHUMBERLAND STREET NORTH WEST LANE: 2-bay single mews building, with N principal elevation, comprising 4-panel timber with plate glass fanlight to right at ground, with small light to outer right; 2-leaf vertically-boarded timber garage doors to left at ground. Blocked window to right at attic, blind window at centre, piended dormerhead breaking eaves at left. Cement rendered W elevation.
