43 Northumberland Street, Edinburgh

43 Northumberland Street in Edinburgh is an early 19th-century terraced tenement designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald. This two-storey building with an attic and basement features nine bays and consists of three separate three-bay houses. The exterior is made of polished ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. It has a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor, and between the principal and first floors, along with projecting cills for the windows. A cornice and blocking course are present at the second floor, and ashlar steps and entrance platts extend over the basement.

On the south (principal) elevation, there are round-arched doorways in the left bays at the principal floor, each leading to a three-bay house. These doorways feature panelled timber doors with semicircular fanlights, which are radial at Nos 43 and 47, and plate glass at No 45. The remaining bays have regular fenestration at the principal floor, as well as on the upper floors and basement.

The east elevation is made of coursed rubble and has windows centered at the first floor and attic. The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately as 49 Northumberland Street.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes canted piended dormers at No 43, a three-bay rectangular dormer at No 45, and a two-bay rendered box dormer at No 47. It also has cast-iron rainwater goods and rendered ridge and gablehead stacks that are coped with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters.

The railings and lamps consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and urn finials. There are also cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings with glass globes.

At the rear, the mews building, known as 2 Northumberland Street North West Lane, is a two-bay single structure with a north principal elevation. It has a four-panel timber door with a plate glass fanlight to the right at ground level, along with a small light to the outer right. To the left, there are two vertically-boarded timber garage doors. The attic features a blocked window to the right, a blind window at the center, and a piended dormerhead breaking the eaves at the left. The west elevation is cement rendered.
