West Lodge, The Drum, Gilmerton, Edinburgh

The Drum in Gilmerton, Edinburgh, is a picturesque lodgehouse built in the later 19th century, featuring a single storey and an attic. It has gabled roofs with overhanging bracketed eaves and is set back from the road behind railings at the west entrance to The Drum. The exterior is made of squared and coursed stugged ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, including a base course, stone mullions, chamfered reveals, and a moulded band course, with the first floor slightly corbelled out.

On the southeast elevation, the entrance is located in an advanced gabled bay, featuring a deep-set door with a lugged raised surround. There is a window in the gable on the first floor and a bipartite window with a bracketed stone canopy to the left at ground level.

The southwest elevation, facing the road, also has an advanced gabled bay with bipartite windows on each floor and a single bay at ground level to the left. At the rear, there is a lower single-storey wing. The windows are sash and case with a 6-pane glazing pattern. The gables feature timber barge boards, brackets, and kingpost details, with grey slate roofing and a corniced ashlar ridge stack to the north.

The property includes six gatepiers linked by a plinth with railings, made of rusticated ashlar with a moulded base and cornice. There are cast-iron gates and a low curved ashlar plinth supporting railings with wrought- and cast-iron foliate panels, along with simple cast-iron railings along the road connecting the final pair of gatepiers.
