Description
Elmpark is a large, two-story, four-bay villa dating to circa 1875, situated at 25 Spylaw Road, Edinburgh. The front facade is constructed of cream sandstone with stugged ashlar detailing and polished dressings, while the rear and sides utilize squared and snecked stugged rubble with stugged dressings to the rear and sides, and polished ashlar dressings to the northwest. A base course, string course above the ground floor, and an eaves cornice with carved, buckle-tabbed brackets are also present. Window reveals are roll-moulded, and the first-floor windows are segmental-arched. A single-story rear wing extends from the main block.
The southwest (entrance) elevation features an advanced bay to the left with a full-height, canted window (1-2-1 design). An entrance porch with a shouldered arch, carved spandrels and keystone, is located in the re-entrant angle to the left of centre, accessed by steps with ball-finialled panelled dies and balustrade. A stained glass sidelight depicting a fruit roundel is within the porch, alongside a roll-moulded door surround, fielded paneling to the door and sidelights, a large rectangular plate glass fanlight, and a tiled vestibule. Etched glass is present on the inner door. An arvaded pierced balustrade with ornamental ball finials sits above the porch. A single window is located above the porch at the first floor. The bay to the right of centre incorporates a bipartite window at ground floor level, and a single window at the first floor. The bay to the outer right features a full-height, canted window (1-2-1).
The northwest (Spylaw Road) elevation is four bays wide, incorporating single windows to the outer left bay. The bay to the left of centre contains a bipartite window at ground floor (with the right window forming a door) and a single window at the first floor. A blind, shouldered-arch recess is at ground floor level in the bay to the right of centre, with a single window at ground floor. The bay to the outer right is punctuated by single windows. A central, scroll-flanked, corniced wallhead stack rises from this elevation. A single-story extension to the left features a bipartite window.
The southeast elevation is dominated by a large timber conservatory with round-arched openings and a raised, gabled ridge section. A single window is positioned at first floor level to the right. Another central, scroll-flanked, corniced wallhead stack is present.
The rear northeast elevation showcases an M-piended main block with a timber skylight to the right. A tall, tripartite transomed stair window with stained glass is positioned to the right, accompanied by single windows to the left. Three wallhead stacks are visible, as are two single-story, parallel rear wings. The right-hand wing is gabled with an apex stack, while the left-hand wing is piended and platformed, featuring a wallhead stack.
The building utilizes timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing, and is roofed with Scottish slates and lead flashings. A total of five wallhead stacks, one apex stack, two central stacks, and octagonal cans are present. The interior of the property was not inspected in 1992.
Tall rubble boundary walls with semi-circular coping define the front and sides of the property. Three elaborate gatepiers, featuring bands of nailhead detail, intricate pyramidal coping, and ball finials (one of which is missing), mark the entrance.
