Description
The lodges at Leith Fort, built around 1810, are a pair of matching two-storey Palladian structures made of cream sandstone. They are designed to flank the gateway that leads into the forecourt of the fort. The buildings feature rubble walls with droved ashlar on the front and polished ashlar dressings. Each lodge has two bays with open-pedimented end gables, accompanied by single-storey bays. The inner bays contain round-headed openings and pilasters, while the outer bays are simpler in design. The rear elevations have oculi.
The gateway is constructed from ashlar stone and includes a base course and coping. It features a pair of square piers and is flanked by round-headed pedestrian arches with impost stones. The outer posts of the arches are marked with Ordnance Survey benchmarks.
Additionally, there is a boundary wall made of ashlar-coped rubble that runs along North Fort Street and the northern side of the site.
