The Old Tolbooth, 15-13 Bell's Brae, Dean Village, Edinburgh

The Old Tolbooth, located at 15-13 Bell's Brae in Dean Village, Edinburgh, dates back to 1675 and has undergone several alterations, including the addition of a chapel by R S Lorimer in 1900. In 1976, it was converted into flats. This former granary is a roughly 12-bay, 4-storey building with a rectangular plan, featuring crowstepped gables and two prominent crowstepped stair towers on the south side, situated on ground that slopes down to the west. The exterior is finished in painted harl with raised chamfered margins.

Notable architectural features include moulded corniced and keystoned doorways located in the re-entrant angle of the stair towers, with a keystone on the eastern side dated 1675. There is a roll moulded blind doorway on the west stair tower, which is adorned with a carved relief panel depicting cherubs, heads, scales, and cakes. Above this doorway, an entablature is inscribed with the words "GOD BLESS THE BAXTERS OF EDINBURGH UHO BULT THIS HOUS 1675." The building has a roughly regular arrangement of windows, with some blind windows on the second floor. A round arched ashlar bellcote, added in 1900, is located on the west side.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, featuring plate glass, with some lattice windows and timber shutters on the stair towers, which were installed during the 1976 conversion. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slates, and the gable end stacks are coped and rendered, topped with modern clay cans. The building also has cast iron rainwater goods.
