McEwan Lantern Pillar, Bristo Square, Teviot Place, Edinburgh

The McEwan Lantern Pillar, located in Bristo Square at Teviot Place in Edinburgh, was designed by Robert Rowand Anderson around 1890. This four-stage tower is made of carved Portland stone and is set on three convex plan steps, prominently positioned in front of McEwan Hall on the south side of Bristo Square. The base section has three sides with framed panels beneath a cornice. The next stage features ornately carved foliate scrolls that separate carved panels depicting mythological scenes and a coat of arms. The third stage displays floral garlands hanging between the scrolls, which support a fluted bowl beneath a frieze of dancing cherubs. At the top, there is a tall, ornate, hexagonal cast iron architectural lantern supported by foliate and rounded brackets.
