55 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh

53 Cockburn Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic Scots Baronial tenement block designed by architects Peddie and Kinnear between 1859 and 1861. The building features three bays and shops on the ground floor, highlighted by a central crow-stepped gable with a tall fluted chimney stack. It is constructed from lightly stugged squared and snecked sandstone with polished dressings, although the ground floor has been painted. A continuous cornice runs along the ground floor, and there is a stepped string course beneath the second-floor windows. The rainwater goods are supported by metal brackets and adorned with carved owls and gryphons.

The windows have stop-chamfered surrounds, with stone-mullioned bipartite windows on the first floor and basket-arched windows on the second floor. The attic features finialled, swept pyramidal-roofed two-light dormers. The building predominantly uses plate glass in timber sash and case windows, and it is topped with grey slates. The apex and ridge stacks are corniced and have circular cans.
