Description

41 Cockburn Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic tenement building designed by architects Peddie and Kinnear between 1859 and 1861. It features four bays and shops on the ground floor, with a distinctive conical-roofed circular tourelle at Anchor Close, topped with a finial and covered in fish-scale slates. The building is constructed from lightly stugged squared and snecked sandstone, accented with polished dressings.

The ground floor has a continuous cornice and a stepped moulded string course below the second-floor windows. The ground floor openings are roll-moulded and basket-arched, while the first-floor windows are stop-chamfered and depressed-arched. There is a timber-panelled door leading to the flats, topped with a plate glass fanlight. The attic features a finialled gable at the center, which includes a small stone-mullioned bipartite window and two small wallhead stacks, flanked by two finialled timber dormers.

At the rear, there is a drum staircase with a moulded, stepped string course and a conical roof topped with a weathervane. The right side has a crowstepped gable, while the left features a finialled dormer-headed window that breaks the eaves. The building has four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows.
