Description
The Canny Man's is a late Victorian public house built around 1890, located at 237 and 239 Morningside Road in Edinburgh. This two-storey, three-bay corner block features a square plan and is constructed from grey sandstone, with stugged ashlar on the front and north sides, and squared and snecked stugged rubble at the rear. The building has a base course, a moulded string course above the ground floor, architraved windows, and lugged windows on the first floor. It also has overhanging eaves and shouldered, corniced wallhead stacks.
On the west elevation facing Morningside Road, there is a full-height canted window with a half-piend roof in the left bay. The centre bay has a lugged doorway with a string course above, featuring a two-leaf panelled door and a three-pane fanlight, flanked by a broad bipartite window with timber mullions to the right, and a single window above on the first floor. The right bay has another doorway with similar detailing and a bipartite window on the first floor.
The north elevation, facing Canaan Lane, has a centre bay with a doorway flanked by a single window to the right and paired windows above on the first floor. The outer bays are widely spaced with single windows, and there are two short wallhead stacks.
The rear elevation features single windows and a modern fire escape stair, with a tall wallhead stack to the right of centre. There is also a detached single-storey stable block with two large openings and a gabled hayloft door.
The building has 4-pane timber sash and case windows, a green slate piend and platform roof with lead flashings, and three wallhead stacks, including one central stack. The eaves gutter is moulded.
Inside, the main room boasts a corbelled egg and dart cornice, dado panelling with a fluted frieze and dentilled cornice, an embossed ceiling, and a timber bar with fielded panelling and fluted pilasters. The gantry and fittings also feature fluted pilasters and a dentilled cornice. A side room includes reeded panelling, a swagged frieze, and a dentilled cornice, along with a painting of a kneeling volunteer by Sam Bough, RSA. The windows and doors have frosted and etched glass.
The property is enclosed by a low wall at the front with later railings, and a tall wall at the rear that encloses the courtyard and stable block.
