Description

51-61 Forrest Road in Edinburgh is a four-storey building with an attic, designed by James Connel in 1872. This five-bay structure features Baronial details at the corner of Forrest Road and Lauriston Place. The building is constructed of coursed ashlar, painted at the ground level, with rubble on the sides. It has crowstepped gables and windows set in chamfered surrounds.

On the outer right, there is a recessed single bay with a moulded string course beneath the eaves and a timber dormer in the attic. The second and third bays from the right are gabled, while the first, second, and third floors on the left have bipartite windows. The ground floor features a later pilastraded granite-faced shop front.

In the fourth bay from the right, there is a corbelled out three-storey oriel window, adorned with a carved animal head below the corbel and topped with a finialled pyramidal slated roof. The first floor of the fourth bay from the left has a bipartite window. To the left, an engaged two-storey turret showcases original curved glass in the re-entrant angle.

A lower, recessed three-bay block to the left has a later brown granite shop front at ground level with cast-iron brattishing. Above this, there are single windows in the first and second bays from the right, and two dormer-headed windows behind stone parapets in the attic. The outer left corner features a canted corner with a corbelled out finialled pyramidal-roofed three-storey canted window.

The building has plate glass in timber sash and case windows, graded grey slates on the roof, and corniced end stacks with circular cans.
