Description

There are two K6 telephone kiosks located to the north of the Edinburgh Castle Gatehouse within the Lower Ward. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the K6 kiosks were created to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V's coronation in 1935.

These kiosks are made of cast-iron sections that are bolted together on a concrete base. They have a four-sided rectangular shape with a domed roof. Three sides of each kiosk feature eight rows of three panes of glass, with a wide central pane and two narrow outer panes. The back panel has a blank, moulded section that matches the dimensions of the windows, along with cable holes on either side of the foundry plate at the bottom of the kiosks. Above the main body, there is a plain entablature that is set back from the front, which includes a rectangular slot for signage, complete with trim moulding. An illuminated telephone sign is placed in this slot, and there are ventilation slots positioned below it. The domed roofs are designed with segmental pediments that have a convex moulded edge, and they feature a moulded Royal Crown on the pediments.
