Description
Fair A Far Former Mill is a structure that dates back to the 17th century, with later additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The mill's remains include a rectangular plan of 48 feet by 43 feet, featuring masonry walls that are 3 feet thick, made of sandstone rubble and droved squared stone. There are segmental-arched openings on the north and south sides, while the east side has blocked openings. Inside, there are corbels that once supported machinery such as a great forge hammer, great tilt hammer, bellows, shears, and grindstone. A datestone marked 'BW.IL 1759' was incorporated in 1935 from the remains of the east forge.
Adjacent to the mill is a weir, which is in its current form from around 1790 but was partly reconstructed in 1935. The weir has a segmental curve that creates a drop of approximately 10 feet, resulting in a waterfall. The construction of the weir is roughly squared coursed rubble, and there is a broad and shallowly stepped fish ladder on the west side, although some stones are missing from the coping. A coped walkway runs alongside the mill, featuring concrete steps and cast-iron railings.
