Description

Fat Sam's Restaurant, located at 56-58 Fountainbridge in Edinburgh, was designed by Peter Henderson in 1884. This single-storey building features a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan and showcases Italian Renaissance architectural details. It is situated on a corner site with Semple Street and is constructed from painted sandstone ashlar.

The southeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, has piers flanking each bay at the ground level, with channeling above the plinth. The central entrance features an elaborate two-leaf timber gate with cast-iron panels, leading to a round-arched opening that includes a keystone and a recessed cast-iron panel. A hanging clock is positioned at the keystone, and bull's head corbels support brackets for a corniced, pedimented aedicule that displays '1884. Edinburgh Meat Market' in relief. Fluted pilasters and consoles flank the aedicule, while plain masonry screens are found between the piers of the flanking bays. The round-arched openings above have keystones, and there are modern canopies present.

The northeast elevation, facing Semple Street, features a three-bay rounded corner on the left and seven bays to the right. This section is pilastered and includes a frieze and cornice, with nailhead moulding along the underside of the frieze. Steps lead up to a recessed timber door at the center of the bowed section, with a single window to the left bay and a window breaking the plinth to the right bay, along with a window above the band course. The seven-bay section has a recessed square opening with painted boarded doors at its center, a window breaking the plinth to the outer left bay, and a recessed square opening leading to two-leaf panelled timber entrance doors with glass panels at the outer right bay.

The building features steel-framed windows and a grey slate piended roof with three skylights facing Semple Street, along with an M-gable at the rear. The northeast elevation is adorned with seven modern bracketed lamps attached to the pilasters, hooks along the frieze, and modern curved brackets for globe lights.
