Description

4, 5, 8 Chalmer's Buildings, located at 88 Fountainbridge in Edinburgh, is a three-storey rectangular-plan range of artisan housing designed by Patrick Wilson in 1855. The building features squared and snecked stugged rubble with polished grey sandstone ashlar dressings, strip quoins, and droved long and short surrounds.

On the southeast elevation facing Fountainbridge, there is a two-bay gable end that is chamfered at the corner to the left. The shopfront includes moulded, shouldered windows and a recessed central entrance door, flanked by replacement coursed pink sandstone masonry. The upper floors have single windows, and a plaque reading "Chalmers Buildings 1855" is carved in relief between the first-floor windows. The gable features a round-arched single window and a slit light to the left, with narrow single lights on the first and second floors of the chamfered corner.

The southwest elevation, which is the principal elevation, has 18 bays. Each three-bay section at the ground level has doorpieces with bracketed cornices, except for the outer right section. Single windows flank these doorpieces, with painted architraves and a cill course on the first floor of the twelve bays to the left. All bays have single windows on the first and second floors. A crowstepped pediment is present on the dormer of the fourth bay from the right, while a piended wallhead gable with a slit light and stack is located on the outer right bay.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with coped gablehead and wallhead stacks, some of which have corniced cans and are machicolated to the southeast. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interior was not seen in 1997.
