Gatepiers And Gates, Boundary Walls, Glenwood Including Garage, 16 Glenlockhart Road

This is a 7-bay, 2-storey Secessionist-style villa, built in 1931-32 by Kininmonth and Spence, and situated within a large suburban garden. The villa is constructed with cavity brickwork, faced with smooth painted cement render, and features advanced outer pavilions and an artificial stone entrance archway at the centre. A base course runs along the lower portion of the building, and a cill course defines the first floor level. The windows have flat arches and predominantly curved jambs. Full-height stepped chimney stacks are prominent on the south elevation, centrally placed, and also on the side elevations.

On the south elevation (principal facade), a timber and glazed entrance door is set within a recessed porch, featuring recessed round-arched jambs made of angled ashlar. Timber and glazed double doors are located in the outer pavilions. The west elevation has a prominent stepped stack centrally placed, with a square-headed window set within a round-arched recess at first floor level. The north (rear) elevation features a projecting bay at the centre, with an oculus window at first floor level on the east return. A timber and glazed double door is found on the right pavilion, and dormers flank the projecting bay. A single-storey, 5-bay, rectangular service wing abuts the left pavilion, with a centrally placed door. The east elevation mirrors the west elevation.

The windows are predominantly timber casements with 16 panes, with distinctive 28-pane, floor-to-ceiling-height windows on the main elevation. The roof is grey slate, with a piended design. Harled and coped ridge stacks are present on the service wing.

The interior follows a 1930s Moderne style. It includes a dog-leg staircase with marble treads and an elaborate wrought iron and bronze balustrade featuring a stylized peacock design. A fireplace in the sitting room has an arched surround with an inglenook. Stone fireplaces are found in the principal rooms, and the doors are predominantly panelled cedar with matching door furniture.

A double garage, faced with smooth cement render and a stone base course, abuts the single-storey service wing. It has a slate roof with an ogee design, replacement profiled steel doors, and a strip of small-paned clearstorey windows to the side elevations flanked by plain pilasters and one in the centre.

The boundary walls are low, painted smooth cement rendered brick topped with timber fencing, with central and flanking piers having curved tops. Wrought iron gates provide access, with ball finials topping the walls.
