Railings, Redford Cavalry Barracks, Colinton and Oxgangs Road North, Edinburgh

The Guard House at Redford Cavalry Barracks on Colinton Road in Edinburgh is a single-storey and attic structure with three bays, designed by Harry B Measures and built between 1909 and 1915. The building features a veranda supported by cast iron columns on its principal northeast elevation and has a two-bay flat-roofed wing to the southwest. It is constructed of dark, coursed rock-faced rubble with pale ashlar dressings, and the windows have projecting cills. The rear elevations include small, high, rectangular windows, with one ground floor window featuring vertical metal bars.

The principal elevation is asymmetrical, with an entrance door on the far left and a window to its right. An off-centre entrance door to the right is accompanied by two windows to its right and one to the left. The attic boasts a pair of large gabled dormers, each with Diocletian windows. The glazing primarily consists of 12-pane timber sash and case windows.

The interior was inspected in 2016 and shows some later alterations. The early 19th century layout includes a large, brick-lined room with high-level windows and a corridor with former cells.

To the immediate northeast of the guard house are a pair of tall, cylindrical rock-faced gatepiers topped with ball caps and featuring arcaded details below a cornice. These are flanked by curved quadrant walls with flat coping between raised corniced piers, also topped with ball caps. The entrance includes two-leaf cast iron gates and pedestrian gates on the sides.

A row of cast iron railings extends southwest from the guard house to the later entrance of the barracks, continuing to the junction of Oxgangs Road North and along Oxgangs Road North.
