Description

The gatepiers and railings at Colinton Mains Parish Church, located at 223 Oxgangs Road North, were designed by Ian G Lindsay and Partners between 1952 and 1954, with the church hall built around 1965 and further additions made later. This church features a distinctive post-war vernacular style, characterized by a double-height, five-bay nave in an L-plan layout, and a prominent squat three-storey square bell tower attached to the west gable, situated on a corner site. The building has rendered brick cavity walls with smooth rendered margins.

The nave includes tall, narrow window openings and a glazed oculus in the outer bays, as well as another glazed oculus in the east gable. The tower has four windows on the ground floor of the west elevation and a two-leaf panelled timber door set in a round-arched opening on the north elevation, accompanied by an inscription panel to the right. There are single windows on the first floor and single louvred openings on the second floor. The tower is topped with a broached roof that features an octagonal louvred lantern with a bellcast roof and a weathervane. The church hall and session room, which are roughly T-shaped, are attached to the north and include both single and two-storey sections.

The windows in the tower are three-pane fixed and eight-pane sash and case windows in timber frames, while the nave features multi-pane windows with top hoppers, also in timber frames. The pitched roof is covered with grey slates and has precast concrete straight skews.

Inside, as seen in 2012, the nave has parquet flooring and the sanctuary is paved with Caithness stone. There is a raked gallery with timber pews at the west end and a choir gallery with an organ at the north jamb of the chancel, both featuring panelled balustrades, with the northern gallery being canted. The church also has an octagonal timber pulpit with an inscribed sounding board above it on the south wall, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling made of acoustic panels suspended from steel roof trusses.

The boundary walls and railings consist of low bull-faced stone walls topped with triangular copes and square-plan gatepiers on the west side. The iron railings and gates are adorned with St Margaret's cross details.
