Description
13-15 Blackfriars Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and attic tenement building, designed by David Clunas in 1871-1873, based on a design by David Cousin and John Lessels. It features four bays and is situated on sloping ground, forming part of a cohesive row on the east side of Blackfriars Street. The building is constructed from squared and snecked rubble with sandstone ashlar dressings. It has chamfered long and short window margins, with shops on the ground floor, a timber door at the center, and recessed doorways for the shops on the left and right. A moulded cill course is present at the third storey, and there are pedimented dormers that break the moulded eaves course. Above these, timber pedimented attic dormers are set within the pitch of the roof. The windows are timber sash and case with four-pane glazing, and the roof is covered with graded grey Scottish slate. The building also features broad coped ashlar stacks with clay cans and cast-iron rainwater goods.
