Description
9 Blackfriars Street in Edinburgh is a B-listed building designed by Robert Morham between 1871 and 1873, adapting a design by David Cousin and John Lessels. This four-storey, two-bay tenement serves both retail and residential purposes and features an unusual double-height, twin-gabled attic. It is situated on sloping ground and is part of a cohesive row on the east side of Blackfriars Street. The building is constructed from squared and snecked rubble with sandstone ashlar dressings, and it has chamfered, long and short window margins.
The ground floor includes a shop with five shallow segmental-arched openings, and there is a timber door located in the far left bay. A heavy moulded cill course is present at the attic level. The windows are timber sash and case with four-pane glazing. The roof is covered with graded grey Scottish slate, and there are broad coped ashlar stacks with clay cans. The building also features cast-iron rainwater goods.
