Description
This is a four-storey and attic tenement block, built in 1897 by Dunn and Findlay, situated on Home Street and Lochrin Place in Edinburgh. The building exhibits Jacobean detailing and originally contained shops at ground floor level with flats above. It presents an almost symmetrical facade constructed from polished yellow sandstone ashlar.
The architectural design includes a cornice band between the ground and first floors, featuring an egg and dart moulding underneath. Cill courses are present at the first and second floors, and a prominent eaves cornice runs along the top. Windows are set within moulded surrounds, with cornices at the first floor level and projecting cills on the third floor. The roof is a Mansard style, featuring a central pyramidally-roofed block and finialled ogee-roofed corner towers. Dormer windows are incorporated into the attic level, with some having segmental pediments over single windows and others featuring piend roofs over stone-mullioned bipartes. Canted bays are also present, topped with scalloped parapets.
The east elevation (Home Street) has a slightly advanced central block incorporating the entrance to the tenement stair. The entrance itself features a timber panelled door with plate glass fanlight, set within a depressed-arched moulded surround adorned with a carved Mannerist mask on the key-block. Stone mullioned tripartite windows are positioned on the first, second, and third floors above this central block. Flanking bays to the left and right showcase bipartite windows on the first, second, and third floors, with segmental-headed dormers above the left-hand outer bay and a piend-roofed dormer above the right-hand outer bay. Canted bays with tripartite dormers are incorporated into the second and fourth bays from the left, and the third and fifth bays from the right, alternating with narrower bays containing segmental-headed attic dormers.
Entrances to the corner shops are framed by round-arched surrounds with stop-chamfered edges and scrolled key consoles. These arched surrounds sweep down to bowed three-light windows on the first and second floors, transitioning to polygonal shapes on the third floor and in the attic. Decorative carved details are positioned between the windows at attic level, and decorative moulded pilasters remain between some of the shops.
The north (Lochrin Place) and south (Lochrin Buildings) elevations feature canted bays above the shops, with piend-roofed bipartite dormers positioned above. Three bays are present to the east, with timber panelled doors and plate glass fanlights in depressed-arched, stop-chamfered surrounds. Single and bipartite windows are regularly disposed above the doorways, with segmental-pedimented dormers in the attic.
The majority of the windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The roof is covered with graded grey slates. Double-corniced stacks, some of which have been rebuilt, rise from the wallheads, along with circular cans on the side elevations and ridges. Cast-iron gutters and downpipes are present with decorative hoppers.
