Description
This building, located at 8B Mortonhall Road in Edinburgh, is a villa designed by Archibald Macpherson in 1890. It is two stories tall and has an irregular three-bay plan. The exterior is made of squared and snecked pale sandstone with polished dressings. The windows feature roll-moulded surrounds, and there are cornices above the ground floor windows, along with overhanging swept eaves.
The entrance elevation consists of three bays, with recessed entrance porches on the outer left and right. The left porch contains a roll-moulded depressed-arched doorway, a cornice with a blind ashlar balustrade above, and a lean-to conservatory at the first floor. It also has a curvilinear gable with an inset oculus behind, a panelled door, and a divided fanlight. The right porch has a panelled door with glazed upper panels and a bipartite window that breaks the eaves above. The central bay features a single-storey canted window, and there is a stone balustrade enclosing a balcony above the first-floor bipartite window. Single windows are present in the flanking bays.
The north rear elevation has three bays with service wings on the outer left and right. It includes tripartite windows at the ground level in the center and outer right bays, with relieving arches, and bipartite windows on the first floor. There are single windows in the first bay.
The east and west elevations each have single windows. The ground floor features plate glass sash and case windows, while the first floor has small-pane and lying-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with a gabled dormer on the south side and a piend-roofed dormer on the north side. There is a corniced ridge stack and two linked corniced wallhead stacks on the east side.
The interiors were not seen in 1991. The property also includes corniced ashlar gatepiers at the street, a low saddleback wall along the street, and high coped mutual walls.
