Description
Craigholm is a large, irregular villa built in 1880 to a cottage style design by John MacLachlan. It is two storeys and has an attic, with four bays in its front elevation. The building is constructed of yellow sandstone, with squared and snecked rubble facing and bull-faced dressings featuring polished ashlar reveals. Chamfered reveals and ashlar mullions are incorporated throughout, as are decorative carved bargeboards, pendants, and finials to gables, dormers, and porches. The eaves overhang, revealing the rafters.
The front (east) elevation has four bays. A large, decorative projecting gabled timber entrance porch is located to the left of centre, entered on its flank. A four-light stairhall window is positioned at the first floor, set into stone with a relieving arch above, and contains glass set into stone without surrounds. To the right of centre is a narrow secondary door and a bipartite window at ground floor, with a gabled dormer window above. A recessed bay is located to the outer right, containing a small porch with a rubble column in the re-entrant angle, three stepped single windows above, and a small bipartite window in the gablehead. The bay to the outer left corbelled above the ground floor and features a tripartite window at ground floor and a bipartite window at the first floor. A single-storey double garage with timber doors is attached to the right.
The rear (west) elevation has an advanced gabled bay to the outer left featuring bipartite windows to each floor. A lean-to conservatory is situated at ground floor to the left of centre, with a bipartite window set under a gabled dormerhead at first floor, and a gabled dormer above. A bay to the right of centre features a bipartite window at ground floor and a single window above. A two-storey canted ashlar window breaks the eaves and is swept to a square in the gablehead to the outer right. A shouldered wallhead stack is centrally positioned.
The south elevation is three bays wide. A gabled bay to the left includes a slightly projecting bipartite window at ground floor and a tripartite oriel with a half-conical roof in the gablehead above. The central bay features a rectangular projecting bipartite window at ground floor and a window with a gabled dormerhead at first floor. A shouldered wallhead stack is situated to the right.
The north elevation provides a single-storey garage at ground floor, three single windows at first floor, one bipartite and one single rectangular dormer, and a shouldered wallhead stack to the right. The building has timber sash and case windows, largely with plate glass glazing, with some four-pane windows. The roof is slate with lead flashings. There are three wallhead stacks, two ridge stacks, and moulded gutterheads.
The interior was not inspected in 1992.
The property is surrounded by a low rubble boundary wall with saddleback coping to the front, and a higher rubble wall to the rear and sides. Later pedestrian and carriage gates, along with railings, are also present.
