Description

This is a two-story, three-bay classical villa, built around 1875. It is rectangular in plan, with a single-story pavilion projecting to the southeast and a basement to the rear. The front facade is cream-colored ashlar, while the rear and sides are constructed of squared and snecked rubble with droved ashlar margins. Bull-faced quoins are visible on the rear. The building features a base course, a band course above the ground floor, moulded stone brackets supporting the eaves cornice, and shouldered architraves around the windows; at ground floor, the windows have inset star details. Window reveals are chamfered at the rear and sides, and the windows have ashlar mullions and cills.

The northeast (front) elevation is three bays wide, with a single-bay, piend-roofed pavilion with a basement to the far left. A prominent open ashlar porch occupies the center bay, featuring square Roman Doric columns, an entablature, and an ashlar balustrade above. The porch's architraved surround contains a two-leaf panelled door. The ground floor has tripartite windows in the outer bays, while the first floor has bipartite windows. The pavilion has a bipartite window at ground level and a balustraded parapet.

The southwest (rear) elevation is three stories high and also three bays wide. A two-story wing slightly projects to the right. A full-height, canted ashlar window with a half-piend roof is located to the far left. A single window is present on each floor of the center bay. The right bay has bipartite windows on the ground and first floors, and a four-light box dormer sits in the central roof space. The wing's full-height, canted ashlar window is topped with a half-piend roof and a polygonal conservatory at ground floor, which has cast-iron cresting and a finial.

The northwest (Colinton Road) elevation has a later, square, flat-roofed entrance porch in the center. Above this is a tall, transomed bipartite stair window. A central, shouldered coped wallhead stack with an arrowslit opening is also present.

The southeast elevation has a side door and a single window at basement level of the wing; three bipartite windows are placed on the ground floor. A single window is centrally located above the main block. A central rendered wallhead stack is also present.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing. The roof is slate with lead flashings, and there are two wallhead stacks. A box dormer is located at the rear, behind a stack to the northwest, and Velux windows are positioned on the southeast side.

The interior was not inspected in 1992.

A tall rubble boundary wall runs along the northwest side, topped with stugged ashlar semi-circular coping. It includes a carriage gate with gatepiers topped with ball finials, an ashlar overthrow to a pedestrian gateway, and a low rubble wall to the front with saddleback coping and a cast-iron pedestrian gate.
