Description

Swanston Old Farm is an early 18th-century farmhouse, with later alterations and extensions, now subdivided into three separate dwellings. A 20th-century extension has also been added. The original farmhouse was built as a two-story and attic L-plan, with crowstepped gables on the north side. A two-story range adjoins the north gable, and a lower two-story range, originally a separate building, connects at a right angle to the south of this, forming a U-shaped plan open to the east. The farmhouse is constructed of harled rubble with painted brown ashlar dressings.

The east elevation’s northern section has a single window, likely inserted, on each floor, and a gable end with additional windows. The central range connects to the north gable, with an entrance and inserted window. The southern range adjoins the central range at a right angle and includes a coped gable end and an entrance.

The west elevation features an inserted entrance and a later 19th-century two-story canted bay. Dormers have been added to the attic, and the fenestration is irregular, with several inserted windows. The north elevation has a crowstepped gable and modified windows, including a dormer. The south elevation has a raised entrance and a 1980s bay extension.

The farmhouse has mostly 12-pane timber sash and case windows and grey slate roofs. Coped gablehead stacks are present on the three corner gables of the original farmhouse, and a coped ridge stack is on the south range. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also visible.

Interior alterations, primarily from a 1980s refurbishment, have changed the internal layout. Nos. 120 and 124 contain timber, Adam-style fireplaces, likely relocated from other rooms. A low rubble boundary wall with rubble coping runs along the south and west boundaries.
